EFTSL value of units : All 10 cp units in this course have an EFTSL value of 0.125. Units with a cp value of a multiple of 10 have corresponding EFTSL values.

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must have completed a Bachelor degree in any discipline.

International applicants need to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy.

Completion requirements

To qualify for the degree, a student must complete 160 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, including:

PATHWAY 1 (160 credit points)

Students may choose to pursue a named specialisation.

  1. To qualify for the degree with a named specialisation, a student must complete 160 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings comprising:
  2. 30 cp from the Specified Units (Part A) (if introductory Biblical Studies, Theology or Philosophy units have been undertaken as part of previous studies, 30 cp from Electives*);
  3. a minimum of 60 cp from one specialisation group (Part B);
  4. 10 cp from Introduction to Theological and Philosophical Research (Part C);
  5. 20 cp from Project B Unit (Part D) (to relate to specialisation);
  6. 40cp from Electives (Part E)*. OR
  7. To qualify for the degree a student must complete 160 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings comprising:
  8. 30 cp from the Specified Units (Part A) (if introductory Biblical Studies, Theology or Philosophy units have been undertaken as part of previous studies, 30 cp from Electives*);
  9. 10 cp from Introduction to Theological and Philosophical Research (Part C);
  10. 20 cp from Project B Unit (Part D);
  11. 100 cp drawn from Electives (Part E)*.

Note: at least 80 cp of all units studied must be at the 600-level.

* Students may take Electives drawn from the Schedule of Unit Offerings (listed) or, a maximum of 40 cp drawn from Religious Education units or, a minimum of 20 cp drawn from Educational Leadership units at 600-level.


PATHWAY 2 (120 credit points)

To be eligible for Pathway 2, a student must have completed one of the following prerequisites:

a. the Bachelor of Theology (or equivalent);

b. the Bachelor of Theology (Honours) (or equivalent);

c. the Bachelor of Arts with a Theological Studies OR Study of Religions Major (or equivalent);

d. the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and Bachelor of Education (Secondary) when studies successfully undertaken to meet requirements for accreditation to teach Religious Education (or equivalent);

e. the Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies, Graduate Certificate in Catholic Studies, Graduate Certificate in Religious Education (or equivalents); 

Students may choose to pursue a named specialisation.

  1. To qualify for the degree with a named specialisation, a student must complete 120 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings comprising:
  2. 30 cp from the Specified Units (Part A) (if introductory Biblical Studies, Theology or Philosophy units have been undertaken as part of previous studies, 30 cp from Electives*);
  3. a minimum of 60 cp from one specialisation group (Part B);
  4. 10 cp from Introduction to Theological and Philosophical Research (Part C);
  5. 20 cp from Project B Unit (Part D) (to relate to specialisation); OR
  6. To qualify for the degree a student must complete 120 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings comprising:
  7. 30 cp from the Specified Units (Part A) (if introductory Biblical Studies, Theology or Philosophy units have been undertaken as part of previous studies, 30 cp from Electives*);
  8. 10 cp from Introduction to Theological and Philosophical Research (Part C);
  9. 20 cp from Project B Unit (Part D);
  10. 60 cp drawn from Electives (Part E)*.

To be eligible for Pathway 3, a student must have completed one of the following prerequisites:

Graduate Diploma in Theological Studies (or equivalent).

Students may choose to pursue a named specialisation.

  1. To qualify for the degree with a named specialisation, a student must complete 80 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings comprising:
  2. 40 cp from one specialisation group (Part B);
  3. 10 cp from Introduction to Theological and Philosophical Research (Part C);
  4. 20 cp from Project B Unit (Part D) (to relate to specialisation);
  5. 10 cp from Electives (Part E)* OR
  6. To qualify for the degree a student must complete 40 cp from the Schedule of Unit Offerings comprising:
  7. 10 cp from Introduction to Theological and Philosophical Research (Part C);
  8. 20 cp from Project B Unit (Part D);
  9. 50 cp drawn from Electives (Part E)*.

Note: all 80 cp of units studied must be at the 600-level.

* Students may take Electives drawn from the Schedule of Unit Offerings (listed).

Exit points

A student who has completed the requirements for the Graduate Diploma in Theological Studies (80 cp) or the Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies (40 cp) may exit with that award.

Progression requirements

In all aspects of progress through the course, students will be advised by the Course Coordinator and bound by decisions of the Head of School.
