About social and political philosophy

ACU Social and political philosophy students walking across campus

Engage in rational discussions about the fundamental choices we make as part of our common lives together. While informed by empirical findings, social and political philosophy draws more from first principles concerning a diverse range of matters and questions, including: individual freedom and responsibility versus collective goals and action, the treatment of minority groups, theories of criminal justice, conceptions and implementations of human rights, the role of government in setting and enforcing regimes for a good and just society, and ideals of equality and fairness in society.

Where can social and political philosophy take you?

Along with ethics, social and political philosophy is one of the most immediately practical and socially-engaged areas of philosophy. It provides a crucial theoretical basis for decision-making in areas such as political science, government, law, public policy, and various areas of the humanities. You’ll develop highly transferable soft skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, and the presentation of clear and rigorous arguments. Further study, such as a Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy, can also be valuable for a career in ethics, law, education, political science or business.
