What are psychometric assessments?

Psychometrics is the field of study concerned with the theory and technique of psychological measurement, and includes the measurement of knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and personality traits. Psychometric assessment primarily measures differences between individuals by comparing them with well-established societal norms.

The testing process provides objective information that is often used in the diagnosis of childhood disorders, as well as behavioural and learning disorders. It can also help secure appropriate additional support at school.

Our highly trained provisional psychologists are able to administer test measures that identify areas of functioning that are causing problems for you or your child. Then, working in cooperation with you, your child, and their school, we will collaboratively develop a treatment plan that addresses your child’s strengths and their needs, with a focus on helping your child to build skills and coping strategies.

Psychometric assessments resemble a series of games, puzzles, stories, sounds, and questions. Many people find the testing process to be an enjoyable experience, as it is different to anything they have previously experienced. The test measures we use are not like school-based assessments, and whilst some parts may be similar, they cannot be practiced or studied for.

As part of our best-practice focus, MPC only uses test measures that are internationally recognised, empirically supported, and which also demonstrate high validity and reliability. This means that we only use tests that have a solid research base, and that the tests that we use measure exactly what they are supposed to measure.
