At ACU, we’re proud to be involved in Clemente Australia, a ground-breaking program that empowers disadvantaged Australians.

Transformation through education

Each year, nearly one million Australians aged 18-64 experience disadvantage. These Australians face adversity across a range of life areas, putting them and their families in dire circumstances.

Clemente Australia (Clemente) is a national university education program that aims to empower these Australians, breaking the cycle of poverty, inequity and social injustice.

What is Clemente Australia?

Clemente is a ground-breaking university course for Australians experiencing disadvantage and social isolation.

It provides the resources and opportunity to support people in making changes in their lives through university-level education.

Clemente's goals are to:

  • enhance participants’ self-confidence through rigorous learning, bringing about personal change
  • promote a positive view of the future for those who have been marginalised from society, thus enabling them to re-engage with society
  • make university education accessible to disadvantaged Australians
  • use the potential of humanities education to change lives and promote social inclusion
  • engage in genuine inter-sectoral collaboration for the benefit of disadvantaged Australians.

Since 2003, more than 500 Australians have enrolled in Clemente and many, upon completion, have used it as a pathway to further education, employment and community participation.

The achievement of studying at a university level for someone who has been living on the edge of society can be truly transformative.
