Children First brings disadvantaged children from developing countries to Australia for surgery that cannot be performed at home due to poverty and lack of resources. They help around 23 children each year and usually have around eight children in residence at any one time. Children return home once their treatment is completed.

While in Australia the children live at our Miracle sMiles Retreat in Kilmore, an hour from Melbourne along the Hume Freeway. The property is a 10-bedroom home, storage sheds and activity centre set in 45 acres.

Volunteers are involved in regular working bee’s at the sMiles Retreat to undertake various tasks, ranging from pre-arranged projects by groups of skilled volunteers to general jobs around the house and property. These general tasks may include a specific project, basic gardening, painting, sorting and tidying linen cupboards, sorting the donated clothing into age/season/gender categories, washing windows, sorting and tidying the book shelves. Interaction with the children is to be expected!

There is no cost to volunteer but any donations are gratefully received.

Working bees run from 9.30am – 3.00pm and can accommodate groups of up to 6 people.

Corporate volunteers do NOT require a Working with Children Check as you will not be left with the children unsupervised. However, we do require each member of your group to read the Child Safety Standards.

You will need to bring enough snacks, plenty of water, appropriate clothing and covered shoes.
