The ACU English Language Centre is looking for volunteers who are keen to work with international students, and who are patient, friendly and welcoming. You will need to be interested in learning about other cultures and have a good understanding about ACU and Melbourne culture, activities, events, systems and the like so you’ll be able to share this knowledge with new arrivals both to ACU and Melbourne.

Students studying health science courses or business courses are preferred mentors for our students, but we will welcome others too.

You’ll have a desire to:

  • help ELICOS students to better adjust to the ACU environment
  • help ELICOS students to build their confidence with their spoken English and pronunciation through socialisation, meet-ups, clubs and societies
  • introduce ELICOS students to Melbourne life: the transport system, opening a bank account, finding accommodation, etc
  • help ELICOS students to feel welcome, make friends and feel supported both at ACU and in the Melbourne community.

In this role, you will be required to:

  • assist new international English language students with adjusting to ACU and Melbourne
  • help ELICOS students feel more integrated
  • help them to build a social network with local students already in their future degree programs
  • assist our ELICOS teachers with Special Interest Group workshops and classroom activities, and attend student social events and excursions, orientations and graduations
  • possibly participate in a journal exchange program with ELICOS students to share in their experiences and build trust and rapport.
