Sydney MCS’ Homework Support Program supports primary to secondary school students to remain engaged at school, by providing volunteer tutors to give assistance with their homework. The program is offered 1 afternoon per week 3.30 – 5pm Tuesday during school terms. The position will provide homework help for newly arrived migrant and refugee students aged 12 – 18 attending Primary to High School, many of whom have a low level of English. This program is part of Sydney MCS’ Settlement program which aims to increase capacity, connection and participation in the community.  We provide services to humanitarian entrants and other migrants on eligible visas during their first 5 years of settlement in Australia.

Students will bring to the sessions their own homework that they need assistance with, and volunteers will be expected to assist them to the best of their abilities.

The role

We are looking for volunteers to assist students one-on-one, or one-on-two, with primary to secondary subjects. Volunteers will also be expected to make basic but accurate records of the work completed after each session.


Students will be required to:

  • Have a Working with Children Check Clearance;
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Have excellent oral and written English skills;
  • Be sensitive to the needs of people from culturally and linguistically diverse and refugee backgrounds;
  • Have sensitivity, patience, and a willingness to learn;
  • Have a friendly manner and ability to build a rapport with students, staff and other volunteers;
  • Report any concerns about students’ well-being to your relevant supervisor;
  • Not attend the program under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs;
  • Dress appropriately;
  • Where possible, notify Sydney Multicultural Community Services in advance of absence;
  • Adhere to and follow all of Sydney MCS policies and procedures;
  • Undertake only the duties that are arranged by a Sydney MCS Worker; and
  • Keep private information, gained as part of the position, confidential.
