Since 1975, the Soup Van Program has been providing in excess of 250,000 meals a year to individuals experiencing homelessness and disadvantage. Each of our 1,000 dedicated volunteers bring their unique skills, knowledge and passion to the Soup Van Program. Our teams provides delicious food, hospitality and conversation with individuals seeking our assistance.

 


Position Description

  • Preparing food in a kitchen (times ranging from 12-5 PM depending on which van) and assisting with loading the Soup Vans.
  • Final food preparation, help packing the vans, distributing food and offering compassion to those in need on a ‘Soup Van Run’ (roughly from 6 to 9/10 PM) after which you and the team will assist in cleaning up the kitchen and soup van vehicles.

Position Requirements

To volunteer on this Program, you will need to obtain:

  • Working with Children Check.
  • Informed Consent (Police Check).
  • Food Safety Certificate.

Location

  • Fitzroy – Melrose St, North Melbourne.
  • Collingwood – Eddy Ct, Collingwood.
  • Footscray – Raleigh Road, Maribyrnong.

Dates and Times

Various, depending on location.

  • Food Preparation – approx. 2pm-5pm
  • Soup Van Service – approx. 6pm-10pm

Application Process

Step 1: Please complete, scan and return the following together to volunteer@svdp-vic.org.au:

  • Soup Van Registration Form
  • Informed Consent (Police Check) Form

Complete and have the 100 pts of Identification witnessed by a Justice of the Peace (Police Officer / Chemist / Solicitor). They are able to stamp and sign page 3 of the Check Form. We will process your police check for you – please note that we are unable to accept other recently acquired Police Checks.

Step 2: Obtain a Working with Children Check Card

  1. Apply for a WWCC card online.
  2. Attend a Post Office with your WWCC Form to obtain a receipt – no need to send this to us, as we will get confirmation via post within about 3 weeks of your application being accepted.

If you hold a current WWCC - please link your card to the Society and email us a screenshot of the page.

Step 3: Complete a short Food Safety Certificate, online by visiting the Do Food Safely website
