Pair your course with a worthy cause

Higher education shouldn’t be a one-way transfer of knowledge and ideas. It should be a two-way street, allowing you to engage and make meaningful contributions beyond coming to classes and doing assignments.

It’s our mission to create graduates who are committed to pursuing the common good. Who courageously act on their truths as well as speak them. Who demonstrate respect for the dignity of all, and for human diversity.

When you do a community engagement placement during your course, you’ll learn to work with others in a socially rich environment – putting your classroom learning into practice with real people in real communities.

But that’s not all you’ll get out of community engagement at ACU. We’ve compiled five other reasons for why a placement will be one of the most enriching things you will ever do.

“I was faced with challenges on a daily basis [during my community engagement placement]. I had to deal with a mix of personalities and adjust to life outside my comfort zone. This helped me improve my soft skills like teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and connecting with others. I had an insightful, real-world experience and witnessed the effects my efforts had on others in our community.”

Five reasons to give back

1. Become your best self

The direct and positive impact you’ll make on a community will have a direct and positive impact on you. Your self-image and sense of wellbeing will flourish, and you’ll start to learn who you really are and who you want to be.

2. Find your tribe

Your placement will connect you with other students, staff and the wider university community. You’ll build your personal and professional networks while you’re still studying, developing genuine connections inside the university as well as with our industry and community partners.

These connections offer the chance to develop and grow your personal and professional networks as you look toward graduate employment.

3. Put your learning into action

An ACU education is about learning to look at the world with empathy and confidence. It’s about learning to listen and lead, challenge stereotypes and have the courage to make an impact.

Our community engagement opportunities are a core part of this education. You’ll get a once-in-a-lifetime chance to take your classroom learning and immediately put it into practice. This is an invaluable learning experience and one that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Your knowledge, learning and expectations will be challenged and you will gain real insights into yourself and your career path.

4. Discover research opportunities

Engaging with people out in communities often brings to light the real challenges they face. As a researcher, these problems come with the opportunity to understand and solve complex real-world issues that might otherwise go overlooked.

5. Jump-start your job-readiness

Community engagement is an excellent arena for you to develop highly sought-after transferable skills. It will help you stand out in the crowd as you head toward graduate employment.

You’ll develop your capacity to think critically and reflectively, and take account of ethical perspectives in your decision-making. You will grow your empathy and improve your communication, collaboration and leadership skills – all crucial employability attributes for future graduates.

Find your own opportunity

You’re welcome to seek out your own community engagement opportunity. We’ve gathered some tips to assist you in locating an opportunity that’s right for you:

  • Consider your own skills and strengths and what you would like to learn from the experience.
  • Identify an area of need in the community (marginalised, vulnerable or disadvantaged groups) and then research community organisations that provide support in that area.
  • Think about whether the organisation aligns with the values of ACU.
  • Look to see if the organisation has existing volunteer opportunities on their website.

When you make contact with the organisation, check to see if they have a volunteer coordinator. If they do, you should consider doing the following:

  • Introduce yourself, ask about their volunteer opportunities and, if you’re an ACU student, be clear about the requirements of your community engagement placement.
  • Ask about their requirements for volunteers.
  • Thank the organisation for their time and, if they don’t have any availability for you to work with them, ask if they can refer you to another organisation.
