YSED203 Building Relationships and Supporting Young People

Prerequisites YSED104 Wellbeing and Young People and YSED205 Ethical Principles and Practice of Youth work
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent of lectures, seminars, role plays and guest speakers.

This unit will examine the theory and practice of developing and maintaining support relationships with young people in youth work settings. It will give particular attention to the nature of informal relationships and will seek to identify best practice principles for engaging and supporting young people in primary approaches and models used by youth workers in the sector (ie outreach models, case management models, within participation frameworks). Ethical issues relating to the establishment of appropriate boundaries, the need for supervision and debriefing, developing relationships with young people who present with challenging behaviours, developing and implementing exit plans, and using group work to develop young peoples relationships will be considered.
