THCT207 Church: Purposes and Practices

Teaching Organisation The unit involves 150 hours of focused learning, or the equivalent of 10 hours per week for 15 weeks. The total includes formally structured learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, online learning, video-conferencing, or supervision. The remaining hours typically involve reading, research, and the preparation of tasks for assessment.

This unit aims to familiarize students with classical and contemporary discussions of the church, its purposes and practices, and to demonstrate how such discussions influenced the formation of the Uniting Church in Australia and continue to shape its development and self-understanding. The unit also aims to enable students to understand the way critical doctrinal, biblical and historical, ecumenical and sociological studies mutually inform one another in this particular area of enquiry.
