Mastery of statistics enables public health practitioners to argue for better public policy and achieve better results. This unit will introduce concepts in statistics and the underlying logic, mathematical rules and analytics. By focusing on examples in public health, students will learn to distinguish between data types, foundations for data analysis and correct data interpretation. Students are then introduced to descriptive statistics commonly used to summarize and monitor public health problems including concepts such as probability, proportions, rates and significance. They will critique lay and professional media articles to understand the underlying statistical concepts. They will understand the fundamentals of ‘numbers behind the statistics’ as drawn from public health research papers which present statistical data in health priority areas. Simple and free statistical software applications will be introduced.
