PSYC646 Typical and Atypical Development

Prerequisites PSYC630 Psychological Assessment, PSYC631 Psychological Disorders and PSYC645 Learning Processes and Problems
Teaching Organisation 2 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent.

This unit introduces students to groups within the population whose development is exceptional or atypical. The unit will describe major components of typical and atypical developmental change. It will cover theories of growth and maturation, learning, cognitive development and socialization with emphasis on individual differences and atypical development. Research from a range of psychological, clinical, neuropsychological as well as medical fields will inform this unit. Models and theories explaining normal, accelerated, lagged, and exceptional development across the lifespan will be discussed. The implications for identification, diagnosis, measurement and treatment or management will also be examined in this unit. The unit will also address considerations for Indigenous Australians and culturally and linguistically different groups.
