PSYC636 Child, Youth, and Family Interventions

Prerequisites PSYC630 Psychological Assessment, PSYC631 Psychological Disorders, PSYC633 Counselling One-to-One and PSYC635 Assessment and Interventions with Adults
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent. This may include a 4-hour workshop on child and adolescent psychopharmacology.

This unit involves a critical examination of personal, family and community problems of children and youth. It covers the steps from recognition of the problem in infants, children and adolescents to assessment, treatment, relapse prevention and follow up. The content includes an exploration of the predisposing, precipitating, perpetuating and protective factors in the development of problems. A focus will include the principles and methods of behavioural, cognitive and clinical assessment as well as the functional analysis of significant psychological problems usually found in infancy, childhood and adolescence. The perspectives, procedures and techniques of psychological and psycho-pharmacological interventions for problems commonly seen in children and youth are taught.
