PSYC633 Counselling One-to-One

10 cp
Prerequisites
Nil
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent.

This unit aims to develop students capacity to counsel individuals in one-to-one work. In line with the reflective-practitioner model, students will be encouraged to ready themselves for their practice of counselling skills. An understanding of the functioning of the client will provide a foundation for assessment and formulation. The process of planning and implementing interventions will be considered. Awareness of their own functioning, of the impact of their interventions on the client and of the therapeutic alliance will be developed in the course of the unit. It is expected that completion of this unit will indicate the students readiness to proceed to the practicum aspect of the program. A multi-cultural perspective will be encouraged. Further, this unit assumes familiarity with theoretical approaches to counselling and therapy, with basic listening skills and with ethical principles and practices for psychologists.
