10 cp
Prerequisites PSYC100 Psychology A and PSYC101 Psychology B
Co-requisite: PSYC206 Research Design and Statistics 2
Teaching Organisation 3 contact hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent

This unit addresses the contribution that learning theory provides to the understanding of behaviour. Perception is the process whereby individuals monitor their environments; learning is the process whereby individuals adapt themselves to their environments. Such environments may be internal (physiological, cognitive) or external (geophysical, biological, social, cultural). Reductionist philosophies will be offered as the initial and basic paradigm by which to attempt to understand human and non-human behaviour. Phylogenetic and ontogenetic models of learning will be presented, considering different levels of neuropsychological organisation and cognitive functioning. These models of learning will be linked to a consideration of perceptual, neuropsychological and social development. The topics will be explored in laboratory classes as well as lectures. Beyond the presentation of learning theories and principles, the unit will consider how they might apply to various areas of psychological and educational research and professional practice.
