PHIL103 Origins of Western Philosophy

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent.

The aim of this unit is to give students an understanding and appreciation of the emergence of rational enquiry into ultimate questions in Ancient Greece. It will deal with some main philosophical questions which occupied philosophers up to and including Aristotle. Some of the questions to be considered will be chosen from the likes of the following: the possibility and value of the rational knowledge of nature and of ultimate reality; the principles of explanation and the nature of ultimate causes; the nature of the human soul and its fate after death; the grounds of ethics and politics; and the conditions of human flourishing; and the relationship between the divine, the gods and human life.
