MGMT650 Behavioural Health Economics

10 cp
Prerequisites BAFN600 Finance and Qualitative Methods
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week (two hours of lectures and one hour of tutorial) for 12 weeks or equivalent in intensive mode or online

This unit provides a fundamental understanding of economic principles and their application in health and health care. Basic concepts in economic analysis and the allocation of resources in health care are introduced. Particular emphasis is given to the application of economic analysis to health policy issues in areas such as technology assessment, the pharmaceutical industry, health care planning and developments in health finance. The unit aims to enable students to provide an economic perspective to key issues in health and health care; critically appraise health economic evaluation studies; and analyse the financial implications of proposals for new programs or delivery methodologies. While providing an introduction to modern health economics, the focus of the unit will be on understanding the real world behaviour of stakeholders and firms in the health care industry, including:

  • Patient behaviour
  • Provider marketing behaviour
  • Provider service delivery value chains
  • Financial models of health care provision

The major outcome will be an enhanced ability to develop innovative patient-centric business plans for ventures or new services in the health care industry, whether these be for existing providers of various scale, or start-ups.
