LEGL308 Intellectual Property Law

Prerequisites LEGL101 Introduction to Law, LEGL 201 Company Law
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week (two hours of lectures and one hour of tutorial) for 12 weeks or equivalent in intensive mode or online.

Intellectual Property Law introduces students to the concepts and categories of intellectual property. Students will consider and examine the relevant legal issues relating to the common law rules and statutory regulation of intellectual property including copyright, patents, registered designs, trademarks, trade secrets and passing off. They will examine the Australian law and regulation of intellectual property and also consider the special role of international regulators and international treaties including: the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the TRIPS Agreement, the Berne Convention and the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement. The unit introduces students to the basic principles of intellectual property law, particularly as intellectual property becomes increasingly important and valuable to Australia’s innovative economy.
