LEGL205 Introduction to Health Law

Prerequisites LEGL101 Introduction to Law
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week (two hours of lectures and one hour of tutorial) for 12 weeks or equivalent in intensive mode or online.

This unit introduces students to areas of law regulating the important area of health. The legal issues affecting health law and health care are complex and require a proper understanding of the tri-level of responsibility which is shared between the Commonwealth, States and Territories and local government. Health law administered by national, state and local governments will be explored including policies and strategies which are aimed at regulating health care, euthanasia, mental health, aged care, medical negligence and Indigenous health. Global pandemics which pose a risk not only for Australia but are also of international concern will also be examined. Laws which are designed to protect and promote a healthy society also have important economic consequences for business and commerce in the form of increased productivity and efficiency of the workforce. These issues along with laws, policies and strategies which are aimed at regulating and improving the provision of health care in Australia will be introduced to students undertaking this unit.
