This unit is concerned with the nature and significance of issues arising from the relationship between employers, managers and employees. The central purpose of the unit will be to make students aware of problems which can reduce organisational effectiveness and efficiency but which, if properly handled, can enhance productivity and employer-employee satisfaction. The unit will consider the Constitutional basis for industrial relations legislation in Australia and its historical development, with a focus on current legal and institutional structures. The unit will examine models of employment relations; the implications of current practices of decentralised wage and conditions fixation; the nature and structure of union and employer organisations; mechanisms designed to manage workplace conflict and the importance of industrial relations reform to organisations and society. The Church's social doctrine on the rights and dignity of the human being in the workplace will be discussed.
