HIST108 The Ancient Near East

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent of lectures and tutorials.

This unit introduces and analyses the historical development and institutions of a number of Ancient Near Eastern civilisations. Civilisations studied may include Sumer, the ‘cradle’ of civilisation, Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia, Israel, the Hittite kingdoms and Persia. Themes examined will be the economic and technological bases of Ancient Near Eastern civilisations, religion, social structure, and the development of writing, centralised government and political imperialism.
