Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent

This global health unit focuses on determinants of health in the world today. It will address global epidemics such as TB, HIV/AIDS and malaria as well as population growth, ageing, lifestyle changes and the pandemics of chronic disease and injury. Diseases that are the leading cause of death globally and the impact of potential health threats posed by major disasters, nuclear weapons and bioterrorism will be examined. Given that health is the fundamental right of all people, the importance of health promotion and healthier food and water supplies in reducing the burden of disease, especially preventable disease, will be explained. The role of vaccination and other strategies in reducing the transmission of infectious diseases will be highlighted and major global initiatives to improve world health will be identified.
