EXSC330 Advanced Motor Control and Learning

10 cp
Prerequisites EXSC230 Motor Control and Learning
Teaching Organisation 150 hours of focused learning.

This unit provides students with an overview of both the behavioural and neurophysiological approaches to motor control and learning, directed at the acquisition and execution of human movement. There are three major topics in this unit. The first examines features of the “learning process” such as stages of learning, neural correlates of learning, and energetics of movement with learning. The second considers features of the “learner”, including perceptual-motor systems and their neural correlates. The third examines the “learning environment” which can be modified to enhance the learning process via instructions, demonstrations, practice conditions, feedback, mental practice and their neural correlates. Finally, the unit also introduces students to contemporary topics in the field of motor control such as synergy, coordination, motor abundance, anchoring, affordance, and dynamic touch, thereby motivating students’ pursuit of future research endeavours.
