ETHN109 Indigenous Cultures within Contemporary Australian Society

10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Incompatible ETHN108 Indigenous Lifestyles Past and Present
Teaching organisation: 12 weeks or equivalent. This unit is offered in mixed-mode where there will be 16 hours of direct contact during the two residential periods consisting of lectures and tutorials/workshops. In addition, there will be an online component which will be undertaken between the two residential periods. Students are expected to spend approximately 150 hours in total for a 10 credit point unit.

This unit explores the main elements common to traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, whilst not losing sight of the variety amongst those cultures and the dynamic change associated with European contact. Towards the end of this unit topics concerning 'contact and settlement' will be introduced to enable the smooth transition into the next Indigenous Cultural Studies unit.
