ENGL222 Literature and Visual Text

10 cp
Prerequisites 10 cp from 100-level unit in Literature or MEDA101 Theorising the Media
Teaching Organisation: On campus lectures and tutorials supported by online materials/activities. Three contact hours per week over twelve weeks.

In western culture there has always been a dynamic interplay between the different forms of media, and particularly between visual image and written text. Due to what technology makes possible, in our contemporary moment the combination of image and text is all around us in our daily lives, used in domains from advertising to journalism to ‘high art.’ This unit examines the relationships between written texts such as journalism, poetry, short stories, internet blogging and movie scripts, and visual texts such as film and television, painting, news footage, internet and ‘pop’ graphics. There will be consideration of the ways these media function in culture—their connections to other social and cultural systems—and the internal dialogue in a text that contains both word and image, with analyses of the range of meanings produced by the text-image relationship.
