EDFD553 Social and Cultural Contexts of Education

10 cp

This unit explores the diverse social, cultural and religious contexts of schooling. Preservice teachers will explore the way in which these factors affect learning and impact on the mission and identity of Catholic and other school systems, and individuals within these systems. The unit will highlight that education is political and not value free and that teachers need to develop a critical awareness of the values informing school curriculum, pedagogy and their practices. The broader, social and cultural context of issues for schools including that of the National Framework for Values Education will be addressed. Preservice teachers will evaluate online learning environments, identify issues relating to their safe and ethical use, and analyse web-based learning resources. One of two case studies will be explored; (1) the contexts, distinctiveness and present realities of Catholic education and schooling or (2) the historical context, policy frameworks and present realities of schooling for students in Australian schools.
