DVST201 Humanitarian and Development Work: a Dignity-based approach

Prerequisites DVST100 Introduction to International Development Studies
Teaching Organisation. 3 hours per week for 12 weeks or equivalent

The specific focus of this unit will be to examine humanitarian and development work through the lens of the foundational principle of Catholic social thought - the dignity of the human person. The unit will explore how Catholic Social Teaching principles provide an ethical basis that can be applied practically to humanitarian and development work, using case studies from the field including various facets of disaster management. The typology of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will be examined as well as the various approaches taken by aid agencies, both local and international, especially those which are faith-inspired. Students will also analyse UN and government approaches to aid and development.
