COUN632 Assessment and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

Prerequisites COUN601 Counselling Theories and Techniques, COUN626 Counselling Practice Skills
Teaching Organisation Two hours per week for one semester via lectures and skill based workshops. Additional weekly reading will be required.

This unit will introduce students to the cognitive behavioural model of therapy both in relation to theoretical underpinnings and foundation practice skills. The unit will include an overview of contextual development of cognitive behavioural approaches; evaluative research and current status; contemporary issues and development. Assessment, diagnosis and case formulation will be addressed. Students will learn about behavioural interventions including relaxation methods, systematic desensitization, exposure therapy, assertiveness and behavioural experiments and response prevention; and cognitive interventions including identifying and modifying dysfunctional cognitions, Socratic questioning, challenging core beliefs, and cognitive distortions. Students will learn how to apply these evidence based methods in counselling clients with anxiety, anxiety disorders and depression; and clients experiencing stress in life, in the family, workplace and relationships.
