COUN628 Social and Cultural Critique

Teaching Organisation Two contact hours per week via lectures and skills-based workshops. Additional weekly reading will be required.

This unit explores the nature of society and culture from a sociological perspective. The relationships between various social and cultural forms, institutional sites and the practices of everyday life will be examined. It introduces students to concepts such as hegemony, ideology and culture, in order to provide intellectual frameworks for the reading of diverse social forms and practices. Beliefs and assumptions underpinning modernist and postmodern worldviews will be examined with reference to the impact that these beliefs have on social structure and policy. Students will be encouraged to explore their own beliefs and assumptions about the nature of society and community and how these might impinge on their practice of counselling. The unit enables students to theorise aspects of their own everyday lives particularly the meaning of family and community, the significance of place, the nature of ‘belonging’ to groups or subcultures, and the nature of social identity.
