COUN616 Relationship and Family Counselling

Prerequisites COUN626 Counselling Practice Skills and COUN601 Counselling Theories and Techniques
Teaching Organisation 2 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent of lectures, workshops and seminars, with additional weekly reading required.

Building on skills and theory developed in previous studies, this unit aims to inform students about current theory and practice in the area of relationship counselling and family therapy. It recognises the place of marriage as a social institution and its importance to family and aims to review a range of contemporary issues relevant to couples and relationships, and to provide training in particular interventions. It will cover such issues as theoretical models of committed relationships, complexities of family, social and cultural differences and their impact on relationships. Key relationship issues such as couples’ defences, relationship breakdown, mediation and conflict resolution, communications in couples, and families and development of proactive interventions to support relationships will be examined.
