YSED205 Ethical Principles and Practice of Youth Work

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent. A variety of formats will be used throughout the course of this unit, including lectures, workshops, seminars, case studies, student presentations and a guest speaker series.

This unit seeks to explicate the essential principles of ethical youth work practice and advance a definition of youth work. It explores a variety of theories, models and approaches applied to working with young people, in particular community development and ideas of resilience and social connectedness. It will examine in depth some of the key principles of youth work such as social justice, empowerment, participation and advocacy. Further, it seeks to identify good practice principles and illustrate this with the work of agencies in the field. The unit offers an experiential approach to learning and engages students in critical analysis and reflective practice.
