THEO679 Contextual Theologies

10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 2 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent. The unit may be offered on-campus and online.

This unit examines contemporary theologies of social critique. It explores the philosophical and sociological foundations of critical feminist, political and liberation theology and seeks to articulate how these are situated within contemporary Christian discourse. The principle of Gods identification with the poor and marginalised is explored in the scriptures, church teaching and contemporary theologies and attention is given to the critical engagement of the prophetic values of justice, mercy and peace. Political, liberation and feminist approaches to theology are investigated in terms of their claim to provide an effective hermeneutic of social transformation to enhance the contemporary communication of the Gospel.
