THCT206 Church Reform in the 16th and 17th Centuries

This unit examines the religious revolution in western European society of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It explores the widespread and permanent change in the religious culture of Europe tracing both the rise of the Protestant movement in Germany, Switzerland, England and Scotland, and the process of Catholic reaction and reform of the same period, including the Council of Trent. It aims to enable students to understand and appreciate the historical roots of a variety of Christian denominations, including their own church tradition, in the 16th and 17th centuries. Students will be assisted also to develop a sense of the historical interrelatedness of the churches. The unit will assist students in their development as informed spokespeople within their own denomination, and in ecumenical contexts.
