Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent with additional hours in the computer laboratory and in research activities.

This unit provides a theoretical and practical understanding of the research process and an understanding of research as central to building knowledge for social work practice. The purpose and value of research in social work practice and the development of ethical research practices will be addressed, with a focus on evidence-based practice. The special issues to be considered in relation to research with diverse populations will be examined. Research is considered an essential ingredient in building a capacity to analyse theory and research in social work critically. Special emphasis will be given to program evaluation. Students will undertake a small scale research or evaluation project that will allow them to develop skills in utilising both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
