SWTP600 Advanced Social Work Theory and Practice

10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Students will participate in the equivalent of 24 hours class time in a semester in a range of face-to-face and flexible-delivery approaches.

This unit will examine the debates surrounding the status of theory in social work. Theory has been problematic in social work and the controversy that is generated by the theory-practice dilemma, provides a beginning point for this unit. Questions of what is theory and what is practice are embedded in this debate. The history of ideas in social work will be a focus for explicating the theory-practice problematic. Critical and postmodern perspectives have changed the contemporary debate. The issues facing practitioners are how theories guide practice, how theories are constructed and how theories are used in practice. This unit will explore the possibilities of practitioner-generated theories.
