SWTP412 Individual and Community Risk and Resilience

10 cp
Prerequisites Nil

The unit will provide students with an understanding of individual, family and environmental factors which impact on psychosocial risk (vulnerability) and resilience for individuals, families and communities. The unit takes an ecological perspective and a wellness philosophy in exploring the implications of risk and resilience for practice. Knowledge and skills for working from a wellness-based or resilience-based approach with individuals and communities are explored, noting the influence of individual characteristics (eg age, gender, race, religious commitment and ethnicity), community characteristics (eg community assets) along with specific influences on wellness and on coping with lifes challenges (eg illness, disease, disability, substance misuse, loss and change, trauma and natural disaster). Programs and interventions developed as part of presenting this paradigm shift are critically analysed as are the concepts of prevention, early intervention and the promotion of wellness.
