MUSC238 Western Plainchant in Theory and Practice

Teaching Organisation Lectures, seminars and workshops comprising 3 hours per week over two semesters or equivalent.

A study of the history, sources, notation, and forms of western plainchant, as a theoretical background for an informed method of chant performance. A critical approach to chant editions will be developed by examining the restoration of chant since the late nineteenth century, the various schools of performance, and the controversies surrounding these.
