10 cp
Prerequisites BIOL119 Foundation Biological Science 1 and BIOL120 Foundation Biological Science 2
Teaching Organisation 150 hours of focused learning.

This unit will explore both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies used in midwifery practice. Pharmacological principles will be introduced together with a study of commonly used drugs throughout the childbearing process such as analgesics, antimicrobials, oxytocics and tocolytics. The use and safety of drugs during pregnancy, the post-partuperial and breastfeeding will be a unifying focus. Non-pharmacological therapies such as complementary and alternative medicines, massage, aromatherapy, musical therapy and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) will be identified as useful therapies for midwifery practice. Use of water for labour and birth will also be addressed.

Students will develop an understanding of birthing and the impact of illness upon the person, family and community from a holistic perspective. Application of critical thinking strategies will enable students to develop a person-centred approach to those requiring care in a variety of paramedic settings. Knowledge of health promotion will be applied across the lifespan.
