MEDA213 Power, Propaganda and Persuasion

10 cp
Prerequisites MEDA101 Theorising the Media or 10 cp from 100-level units in Communication
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent.

The history of the twentieth century, the first century to experience mass communication on a global as well as a domestic scale, is notable for the many examples of the abuse of the power and authority of mass communications. This unit examines the role of communication in maintaining or changing beliefs and so influencing individual human behaviour as well as large scale social movements and political events. The emphasis is on mass communication and public opinion, on the shaping of political and social movements and on psychological warfare. The unit will pay particular attention to the place of cinema, television, radio and the print media in these communication processes with some speculation concerning the influence of new media on these processes.
