LEGL103 Introduction to International Human Rights Law and Practice

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent of lectures, seminars, small group discussions and role plays.

This unit provides a broad introduction to international human rights. In the first part, the Unit will consider the major international human rights treaties beginning with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and moving through the seven principal international conventions that have given the declaration meaning and force since the Declarations adoption in 1948. In the second part, it will consider the international and domestic mechanisms for the review and enforcement of nations international human rights obligations. The third part will consist of three case study areas of human rights law likely to be of most significance to the class membership: the International Refugee Convention; the right to life, liberty and security of the person; and the right to education.
