HUMA213 Living in a Residential Facility

10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation Lectures, discussion of topics in study guide through distance education mode.

There are a range of options for the older people to live in residential environments according to their levels of care needs: these include retirement villages, independent living units, and aged care facilities which offer high and low care accommodation. The aged care facilities are mostly government-funded but there are also some private agencies that are independent of government funding. This unit examines the issues and concerns that the older person and the family have to deal with in making the initial decision about a residence. It will provide students with knowledge of the legislation that affects the structures and practices of residential service delivery. Students will also have opportunities to appreciate the importance of human values such as dignity, respect, individuality and opportunities for making choices and decisions when living in a community environment. All of these impact on self-worth and quality of life.
