HLSC302 Community Engagement in a Developing Country

Teaching Organisation 150 hours of focused learning.

This elective unit provides an opportunity for students to volunteer to complete a short-term community engagement visit in a developing country, where they can experience differing cultural and health practices and services. Students preparation will include exploration and discussion of the cultural variations and key health issues and priorities of the host country. In addition, a primary health care framework will assist students to reflect upon and interpret their learning experiences with health care professionals and communities with whom they engage. This engagement will also provide a vehicle for the student to develop and reflect upon the values of partnership, equality, mutual respect and commitment as well as the degree of transformation that community engagement has engendered in the student.
