HIST104 Indigenous Peoples in Settler Colonies

Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for twelve weeks or equivalent of lecture/seminar sessions. Specific case studies will be focused on in weekly seminars.

This unit aims to establish a broad global and comparative framework for the study of the spread of settler societies and their interactions with indigenous peoples and cultures from ancient times to recent history. It seeks patterns of interaction and change particularly in Southern Africa, Oceania and the Americas, but with some reference to the Asian region. Case studies of Southern Africa, New Zealand and North America will be used for comparative understanding and argument. Issues of historical sources and ways of interpretation will be explored.
