EDMA628 Learning and Learners in Mathematics

This unit will analyse and critique educational issues in mathematics education from the perspective of the learner. It examines common perspectives on and metaphors for learning, and asks students to review and synthesise research on the learning of mathematics and the social and cultural contexts of learning. The approaches used in this unit will encourage educators to critically review research relating to cognition, affect, culture and equity, and consider the implications for practice. The intention is that students will consider each of these aspects related to learning and the learner of mathematics, and will undertake an intensive study in an area of particular interest.
