This unit is designed to promote a more in-depth examination of many aspects of the processes of learning and teaching a second language which constitute the content of the LOTE C&T 2, beginning with the principles of research methodology into second language learning and teaching. Prospective LOTE educators will explore how to foster a positive second language learning environment in the classroom by studying research results on the main factors affecting second language acquisition. They will examine closely the difference between immersion and classroom instructed second language acquisition and its practical implications, particularly as they relate to the fostering of the communicative approach in the teaching of the main language strands. Preservice teachers will expand their knowledge of how to best cater for different learning styles in the classroom, and develop teaching materials based on best teaching practices, including the use of ICT technology, which are particularly suitable for assessment purposes.
