This unit is designed to provide preservice teachers with knowledge about contemporary practice and effective teaching, and the strategies and techniques to create effective learning and teaching environments that cater for diverse learners. Learning theories that underpin different instructional paradigms, and in particular contemporary practice, will be reviewed. Strategies to address the complexities of teacher performance such as classroom management, program and lesson planning, assessment and reporting, questioning, use of information, communication and learning technologies, and effective use of communication and interpersonal skills for teaching and learning will be explored. The knowledge and skills for teachers to address the pivotal role of language, literacy and numeracy for learning and effective teaching across the curriculum will be covered. The transition from preservice teacher to professional practitioner will be explored, with a specific focus on developing an understanding of the legal framework in which schools operate and teachers must work.
