CHEM505 Energy and Materials

10 cp
Prerequisites Nil
Teaching Organisation 3 hours per week for ten weeks or equivalent.

This unit develops an understanding of the relationship between chemical reactions and the production of energy. The formation of fossil fuels, their extraction from natural resources and the properties of carbon compounds used as fuels are described. The production of energy through combustion reactions and the factors affecting these reactions are investigated. The role played by water in the storage of energy is examined. The use of fossil fuels in the production of raw materials is described. Methods of reducing societys dependence on fossil fuels are investigated. The production of energy and raw materials by electrochemical methods is examined, as well as the production of some useful materials through nuclear chemistry.
