Australian Catholic University - Master of Educational Assessment now available

The Master of Educational Assessment course is a 1.5 year EFTSL offering with flexible online or face-to-face study options. It is designed to provide tools for education experts to deepen their scholarship, research and practice in assessment so they can lead future development of policy and practice.

Master of Teaching (Secondary) (Professional Practice)

ACU’s Master of Teaching (Secondary) (Professional Practice) is for high-achieving graduates with a first degree in science, mathematics, English or history.*

The two-year masters degree will be undertaken through partnership between ACU and schools, equipping beginning graduate teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary for evidence-based teaching.

Each participant in the program will work with a dedicated teacher mentor and university teaching scholar to develop capabilities in three key areas:

  1. aligning curriculum, teaching and assessment
  2. explicitly connecting national priorities of literacy and numeracy with discipline studies
  3. collecting, interpreting and using assessment evidence and school data to improve learning outcomes and for educational accountability

The first year of the program will be campus-based with two clinical placements in schools. Subject to participants meeting high performance criteria and the availability of school positions, the second year of the program will be fully embedded in schools.

Field exercise in the bush for Paramedicine students

On 25 and 26 October 2014, 60 Paramedicine students from ACU’s Ballarat campus went into the bush of Wombat Forest to train to deliver paramedic care in the wilderness.
“Paramedics need exposure in various settings and the field exercise allowed students to apply their knowledge and skills in a bush setting,” said Dr Helen Webb, Senior Lecturer in Paramedicine.

The weekend’s field exercise involved various activities including navigation, wilderness response and search and rescue. All of the scenarios encountered by paramedicine students were based on real life events. This year students were given the opportunity to work alongside the Hepburn SES in search and rescue exercise to promote interagency awareness and cooperation.

“We learnt how to approach medical emergencies in the bush and to identify clinical approaches,” said student Jake Panter whose hope is to work for Ambulance Victoria.
Studying paramedicine at ACU engages students to become competent and confident in emergency situations through clinical practice in both paramedic placements and emergency department settings.

The four years Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine course is offered at ACU Ballarat campus while ACU’s Melbourne campus offers the three years Bachelor of Paramedicine course.

Update on ACU Health Clinic – Fitzroy

Located on the Mezzanine level of the Daniel Mannix Building, on Young Street in Fitzroy, the Health Clinic is now open for business. Refurbishment works were recently completed and the new area provides four acoustically separated consulting rooms, reception area and staff lounge space, and an assessment gym area.

The clinic is committed to producing the best possible learning outcomes and medical services for students, staff and the local community. Our aim is to deliver a range of services in the disciplines of General Practitioner, Exercise Physiology, Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology and Psychology.

Update on Biomedical Science

Applications for Semester 1 2015 entry into ACU’s innovative Bachelor of Biomedical Science course are now open.

Under an agreement with the University of Notre Dame, the top five ACU Bachelor of Biomedical Science graduates will be guaranteed an interview into the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Notre Dame.

Allied Health students volunteer at the 2014 AIDs Conference

Through Living Positive Victoria seven Bachelor of Applied Public Health undergraduate students had the opportunity to volunteer at the World AIDs conference held at the Melbourne Convention Centre in July 2014. Students were briefed on all of the different events that Living Positive where a part of that they could volunteer at; the Outrage film festival at ACMI, the ENUF art exhibition in Federation Square, the global village at the conference, the pre-conference Children and HIV, the candlelight vigil held in Federation Square and more.

Second year Bachelor of Applied Public Health student, Madeline Tatham, was one of the volunteers.. “It was a really good experience,” she said. “I enjoyed listening to speakers and chatting to other volunteers about their experiences.”

New staff in Public Health

Semester 2 2014 has seen three new staff join the Public Health team. The newest arrival is Dr Michael Otim, a health economist with interests in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. Dr Otim joins another recent addition to the team, Dr Erin Mathieu, whose interests includes Epidemiology and Adolescent Physical Activity. Finally, Ms. Penelope Smith (Health Promotion) has come from the Lowitja Institute (National Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research) and has extensive experience in lecturing in Public Health in Australia.

The three new staff join Dr Michael Taylor (Health Law and Policy) and the head of discipline, Associate Professor Shawn Somerset (Nutrition) to support this expanding discipline within ACU. In the year ahead the team looks forward to implementing a number of new subjects including Public Health Entrepreneurship, which aims to enhance students creativity and imagination to promote health.

Entrepreneurship in Action

The Bachelor of Applied Public Health is a relatively new ACU degree, only a few years old. This year, inspired by their public health volunteer experiences in the public health sector, the Bachelor of Applied Public Health students formed the ACU Public Health Students Society.

President, Stephanie Verga, and Vice President, Madeline Tatham, working with their committee members, have been busily preparing for their first event – a healthy yoghurt bar to promote the new association, its mission and goals.

Their second event is a Paste Up project for the RECOGNISE THIS Campaign and will be held in October 2014 on the Melbourne Campus. RECOGNISE THIS is the national youth-led campaign to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our Constitution and remove racial discrimination from it. The RECOGNISE THIS Paste Up is a six-week participatory street art project to engage young Australians in the movement for constitutional recognition. In 2015, the committee hopes to invite a speaker to give a presentation on an emerging public health issue and also undertake a food drive for the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre.

20 years of business at ACU Melbourne

ACU Melbourne celebrated 20 years of business studies recently with an event held in the campus’ new rooftop garden. More than 160 current students, alumni and staff gathered to rejoice in the 20 years of growth and development of the school and to hear the history of business education in Melbourne.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the School of Business (Melbourne). From its inception in 1994 with about 30 students at Chadstone to 2014 with over 500 students, the School offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate, masters and PhD courses.

A function to celebrate this milestone in the School’s history will be held on the evening of 9 October. Guests will include alumni, current and former staff, members of the business community, and scholarship sponsors.
