Indigenous Research
The Indigenous Research Advisory Group (IRAG) was established as a new activity of the ACU Higher Education Indigenous Education Strategies, 2001-2003.
Establishing a culture
IRAG aims to establish a culture of indigenous research across ACU, and increase the participation of Indigenous students in postgraduate research studies, especially research degrees.
Goals of Indigenous research
For this purpose, IRAG has developed a set of goals:
- Goal 1 - Through a process of engagement with Indigenous communities, advance an Indigenous research agenda.
- Goal 2 - Encourage Indigenous participation in setting University research directions, conducting research and using research outcomes.
- Goal 3 - Promote research partnership and scholarship with Indigenous communities, organisations and researchers.
- Goal 4 - Facilitate access to research funding.
- Goal 5 - Increase access, participation, retention and success of Indigenous students in postgraduate studies, especially higher research degrees.
Ethical research procedure
IRAG has also developed a procedure to ensure ethical research in Indigenous studies, which conforms with the Guidelines for Ethical Research in Indigenous Studies published by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.
Opportunities for research graduates
There is a demand for higher degree research graduates capable of the broad analysis needed in rapidly changing social, technological and economic circumstances.
High-quality research training is best provided in an institution that maintains an active and relevant research effort, and offers a strong undergraduate program.
ACU National provides its students with a broad range of higher education opportunities that have as their objective the advancement of scholarship and learning.
